England defender Kieran Trippier has announced his retirement from international football. The 33-year-old earned 54 caps and scored once against Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-final.
"I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country let alone achieve 54 caps," Trippier posted on social media. "It's been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at four major tournaments."

Trippier was a key player under Southgate, starting in England's first six matches at Euro 2024 before being replaced by Luke Shaw for the final. He also started in the Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy and was a regular starter during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
But as Trippier has decided to call time on his international career, a significant void has opened up in the Three Lions squad. With Lee Carlsey in managerial duties now, the new England boss will have to sort out the right side of his defence ahead of the September friendlies.
A number of English players will be in the race for the right-back spot, which is currently being played by Kyle Walker. The Man City defender is also nearing the twilight of his career, which means the upcoming generation will have a real shot at that position in the Three Lions squad. Here are three players who can potentially challenge for the spot.
Chelsea defender Reece James is the frontrunner for the automatic place at right-back. The talented English player has been superb for his club and country, but injuries have marred James' long-term chances in the team so far. James made his England debut in 2020 and since has featured 16 times for the national team.
The 24-year-old has sporadically played in the last few months and is yet to make an appearance for the London club this season. He will have to return to full fitness and have minutes before another call-up in the England team, but James is someone who will be in the run.
Ben White has showcased his importance in the Arsenal squad. The multifaceted player has grown into a right-back despite being originally a centre-back. Mikel Arteta's Arsenal has been superbly served with White, but a fallout during the World Cup 2022 with Gareth Southgate and his staff meant White was not in the reckoning for an England call-up. But with a managerial change, the former Brighton defender may have a potential inroad in the England team.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is England's best right-back when going forward, but his defensive fragility makes him somewhat of a hesitant choice. Alexander-Arnold played mostly as a midfielder in the Euro 2024 for England, a plan which didn't work for them. With Lee Carsley in charge now, the Liverpool player may be integrated back to his natural position. The 25-year-old has immense quality to become a long-term servant for the Three Lions, but he will have to improve defensively in order to cement his place.
