India's oldest football tournament, the Durand Cup has been dominated by several clubs, especially Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, two of Kolkata giants.
The tournament has evolved over time, seeing participation from other top Indian clubs as well as military teams from the country and outside. The most recent champions are Mohun Bagan who won last year's competition by beating their arch-rivals East Bengal in the final.

They also hold the record of winning the most number of Durand Cup titles (17) in the tournament's history. East Bengal are just behind them with 16 titles to their name. Here is a look at the winners from different eras:
Durand Cup winners in Early Years (1888-1940s): In the early years of the tournament, British regiments predominantly won the tournament.
Durand Cup winners in Post-Independence Era (1950s-1970s): Indian clubs started to dominate the tournament after India gained independence.
Durand Cup winners in 1980s to 1990s: This period saw increased competition and the rise of various football clubs.
Durand Cup winners in 2000s: The turn of the century brought new champions into the spotlight.
Durand Cup winners in 2010s to 2020s: In recent years, the tournament has continued to be a major event in Indian football.
Winning the Durand Cup sets the tone for the test of the season for the Indian clubs participating in the tournament from the I-League and the Indian Super League (ISL). With the tournament set to start in only a few days, all teams will be determined to get their hands on the trophy.
