Koeman Defends Netherlands Tactics After World Cup Defeat To Morocco

Ronald Koeman insisted Netherlands’ tactical plan against Morocco was correct, even after a World Cup exit that has increased scrutiny on the head coach. Netherlands went out in the round of 32 on penalties, yet Koeman maintained the approach would not change if the tie were replayed.

The defeat has raised questions about Koeman’s future with the national team, though Netherlands’ coach said any decision will not be rushed. "I have not offered my resignation yet. I am going to calmly think about my future. I am going to get things in order. Maybe I will have made up my mind by tomorrow afternoon. I haven't thought about that yet."

Koeman Defends Netherlands Tactics After Morocco

The round of 32 match finished 1-1 after extra-time, before Morocco beat Netherlands 3-2 in the shootout. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville all failed to convert from the spot, as Netherlands missed three penalties in a competitive shootout for only the second time.

The previous occasion came at EURO 2000, when Netherlands also failed with three attempts against Italy. That historical detail underlined the scale of the disappointment, as another major tournament ended via penalties. Statistical analysts also highlighted the repeat pattern from the spot for the Oranje.

Koeman moved away from the usual four-defender system and selected a back five against Morocco. It was the first time since March 2024 that Netherlands used that shape, when they lost 2-1 to Germany, after playing the next 31 matches with a back four.

Team Possession (%) Shots Expected Goals (xG)
Netherlands 29.9 6 0.24
Morocco 70.1 11 1.36

Across 120 minutes, Netherlands had just 29.9% possession and produced six shots worth 0.24 xG, while Morocco recorded 11 attempts with 1.36 xG. Despite those numbers, Koeman argued the structure was justified. "It is perfectly fine for everyone to have their own opinion. But if I had to do it over, I would have done the same thing," said Koeman. "We discussed with everyone after every match that I felt we were giving away too much. You do that line by line and with the whole group."

Netherlands World Cup tactics and Koeman’s justification

Koeman stressed the plan aimed to control Morocco’s threat and reflected wider discussions within Netherlands. "Given the quality of your opponent, you are asking for big trouble. And even with five men down, the goal against Morocco was scored; with four, there would have been many more moments like that." Koeman also highlighted shared responsibility, saying, "If you agree with something beforehand, you can't say afterwards that it didn't work out." He added, "The whole of the Netherlands was asking for five defenders. Again, I don't care."

The coach accepted Netherlands did not produce enough in open play, yet stayed firm on the defensive set-up. "If it stays 1-0, I will receive compliments from all of the Netherlands," added the Dutch coach. "If I had to do it over, I would do the same thing again. We did show too little, though. That is true."

Netherlands’ early World Cup exit, the missed penalties and the tactical change have combined to place Koeman under strong pressure. Koeman has said the decision on continuing will follow reflection rather than reaction, and Netherlands now await that call after another knockout defeat on the world stage.
