Ronald Koeman has drawn a parallel between young Dutch talent Kees Smit and Pedri, anticipating Smit's involvement as the Netherlands aim to secure their spot in the 2026 World Cup. The Netherlands currently lead Group G, two points ahead of Poland, whom they will face on Friday. A victory would guarantee their qualification for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada with one match remaining.

Smit, aged 19, emerged in AZ Alkmaar's team last season and has elevated his performance in the 2025-26 season. He has contributed two goals and two assists in 11 Eredivisie matches, with Alkmaar sitting third in the league. Additionally, he has provided two assists in the Conference League. Although Smit has yet to debut for the senior national team, Koeman confirmed that he is being considered for the World Cup squad.

The Netherlands have been impressive in their World Cup qualifiers, winning five out of six matches and drawing once against Poland (1-1). They have scored 22 goals while conceding only three. Koeman, who previously coached Pedri at Barcelona, sees resemblances between Smit and Pedri. "I almost regret mentioning his name again [Pedri], but he's a guy who plays in the same position," Koeman stated. He highlighted Smit's ability to evade opponents, scan the field effectively, and use both feet proficiently as qualities reminiscent of Pedri.

Koeman expressed optimism about Smit's future: "The way he turns away from his opponent, the way he scans the area, his two-footedness... I saw that in Pedri too. If he gets half his career, we'll be very happy in the Netherlands." This endorsement highlights Smit's potential impact on Dutch football if he continues to develop similarly to Pedri.
