Koke Criticises Referee Following Atletico Madrid's Heavy Defeat To PSG At Club World Cup

Atletico Madrid's Koke criticises the referee after their 4-0 defeat to PSG at the Club World Cup. He highlights a disallowed goal and a red card as pivotal moments.

Atletico Madrid's Koke expressed frustration over the officiating in their 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain at the Club World Cup. The match, held at the Rose Bowl, saw Atleti defeated by the European champions in their Group B opener. Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha scored before half-time, while Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in added to PSG's tally after Clement Lenglet was sent off.

Despite the scoreline, Koke believed that some decisions went against Atletico. A crucial moment came when Julian Alvarez's goal was disallowed after a VAR review, which awarded PSG a free-kick for a foul by Koke on Desire Doue. "The team had started well," Koke told reporters. "We knew it would be tough against PSG, but 4-0 isn’t fair."

Koke Questions Referee After PSG Victory

PSG have been dominant in Europe since 2025, scoring 105 goals, more than any other team from Europe's top five leagues. They also lead in expected goals (93), shots (682), and shots on target (286). This encounter followed their recent 5-0 victory over Inter in the Champions League final just 15 days prior.

Club captain Marquinhos spoke to DAZN about maintaining motivation: "You never know how a match will go, especially against a tough opponent like Atletico." He praised his team's performance and emphasised staying humble and focused.

Koke acknowledged PSG as deserving winners but felt Atletico had chances to change the game's outcome. "We tried to push forward; we had chances," he said. "We even scored to make it 2-1, but it was ruled out." He noted that small details influenced the result and congratulated PSG on their victory.

Diego Simeone chose not to dwell on referee decisions. "I'm bored with talking about repetitive topics," he stated. "Otherwise, we always seem like victims." Simeone recognised PSG as superior opponents but pointed out that certain details were evident during the match.

Simeone's Perspective on Refereeing Decisions

Simeone refrained from criticising the referee too much, focusing instead on his team's performance against a strong opponent. He acknowledged that discussing refereeing could make them appear as victims, which he wanted to avoid.

The match highlighted PSG's strength as they continued their impressive form. Despite Atletico's efforts, they couldn't overcome the challenges posed by both PSG and some contentious decisions during the game.
