The highly anticipated Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, originally scheduled for August 18 at 7:00 PM at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium), has been declared abandoned due to security concerns. The decision came just over 24 hours before the match, leaving fans disappointed and concerned about refunds on tickets that had already been sold.
The Durand Cup Organizing Committee (DCOC) have assured fans that information regarding the date, time, and venue for the refund process would be communicated via official Durand Cup social media platforms and through a separate press release than the one they have released on August 17.

The recent statement addressing the issue of refunds, read: "The 133rd IndianOil Durand Cup Organizing Committee (DCOC) has announced that BookMyShow, the official ticketing partners of the tournament, will refund the money for both online and offline sales of tickets for the abandonment of the final Group A fixture between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Emami East Bengal FC, originally scheduled at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata on Sunday, August 18, 2024."
The match was expected to be a decider for which team would advance to the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup 2024, making it the most eagerly awaited fixture of the tournament. With most of the tickets already sold, the cancellation has not only raised questions about security but also logistical concerns regarding ticket refunds.
The security concerns that led to the abandonment of the match are linked to the widespread protests sweeping Kolkata and West Bengal. The protests erupted in the wake of the tragic rape and murder of a young doctor, Moumita Debnath, from the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. People across the state have taken to the streets, demanding justice for the victim and calling for action from the authorities.
The Kolkata Derby, known for its electric atmosphere, was set to take on an additional dimension this time, as a significant number of supporters from both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan had planned to use the match as a platform to protest the ongoing situation.
Many fans had prepared banners, created special jerseys with protest slogans, and even considered wearing black as a sign of solidarity. With the match now abandoned, both fans and organizers are left grappling with the disappointment and disruption caused by the escalating security concerns across the city.
