Kolkata Rape Case: ‘Football Above All, But Want Justice!’ Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, And Mohammedan SC Officials Keep Faith In State Administration

In an unprecedented display of unity, officials from three of Kolkata's biggest football clubs - Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan Sporting Club - have come together to address the escalating situation in West Bengal following widespread protests demanding justice for the Kolkata rape case and murder of a doctor from RG Kar Hospital.

On August 18, what was meant to be a day of fierce football rivalry in the city - the Kolkata Derby - was overshadowed by the unrest sweeping across the city. The highly anticipated match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, scheduled as part of the Durand Cup, was cancelled due to security concerns amidst the protests.

Yet, this led to a rare moment of solidarity as fans from all three clubs united in the streets, voicing their demands for justice. In a joint press conference on August 20, officials from the clubs - Debasish Dutta of Mohun Bagan, Debabrata Sarkar and Rupak Saha of East Bengal, and Ishtiaque Ahmed of Mohammedan Sporting - stood together to deliver a powerful message.

They urged the public to maintain faith in the state government's ability to bring the perpetrators to justice. "We all want justice for the victim," Debasish Dutta said, emphasizing the collective sentiment of the clubs. "This is not just a matter for the authorities; it's a matter for all of us."

The officials also acknowledged the disappointment of the footballing community over the cancelled Kolkata Derby, one of the Durand Cup's marquee fixtures. However, they assured fans that their efforts to bring the tournament back to the city had succeeded.

The two semi-final matches and the final will now take place at the Salt Lake Stadium, offering a sense of hope and normalcy amidst the ongoing unrest. The clubs' joint stance represents a significant moment, reflecting not only their support for justice but also their commitment to Kolkata's rich footballing tradition.
