Kolkata Rape Case: ‘History Is Being Made’, Fans React To Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan SC United Protest

Football fans and others have turned to social media to react to the massive united protest held by Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan SC supporters at Salt Lake Stadium on August 18.

The protest was triggered by the cancellation of the much-awaited Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, which had been scheduled for the same day but was called off due to security concerns.

Fans of both teams had planned to use the derby as a platform to demand justice for a recent Kolkata rape case and murder of RG Kar Hospital doctor, with many preparing special banners and jerseys to raise awareness during the game.

However, when the authorities canceled the match, the ultras from both sides issued a call to protest outside the stadium at 4:00 PM on the day the match was supposed to be held. This led to a massive demonstration by the fans.

Social media platforms were flooded with reactions to the protest. One football fan posted, "Joy Mohun Bagan. Joy East Bengal. Jaan Jaan Mohammedan. Together for justice," reflecting the sense of unity among supporters of rival clubs.

Another fan praised the protestors, writing, "Congratulations to East Bengal and Mohun Bagan fans! Your unity has shaken a whole government! Yeh darr humko achha laga!"

The protest was met with a heavy police presence, as authorities tried to control the crowd. Many protestors were detained and taken off the streets in police vans, sparking outrage among fans.

One fan club's X handle shared its anger, posting, "Shame on you Kolkata Police. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal supporters are in police van!! Totally disgrace of Indian football."

Despite the detentions, the protest has sparked a significant online movement, with fans continuing to criticize the authorities for their handling of the situation.

The cancellation of the derby and the subsequent crackdown on protestors have only added fuel to the ongoing conversation about justice and safety in West Bengal.
