Bayern Munich's exit from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage was a tough pill for Vincent Kompany to swallow. Despite a 2-2 draw against Inter Milan in the second leg, Bayern's earlier 2-1 loss meant they were eliminated with a 4-3 aggregate score. Injuries played a significant role in their defeat, according to Kompany.
Harry Kane initially brought Bayern level in the tie with his goal at San Siro. However, Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard scored to turn the match in Inter's favour. Eric Dier managed to equalise again during the game, but Yann Sommer denied Thomas Muller a late chance to level the aggregate score.

Kompany highlighted that missing key players like Hiroki Ito, Dayot Upamecano, Jamal Musiala, Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman, and Aleksandar Pavlovic significantly impacted their performance. "I think the big issue, before Inter, was injuries," Kompany told reporters. Despite these challenges, Bayern put up a strong fight across both legs.
Throughout Wednesday's match, Bayern had 20 shots and created an expected goals (xG) value of 1.4. They matched Inter with six shots on target each. Yet this effort wasn't enough to secure a place in the semi-finals or play in the final at their home ground, Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich has now been knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals four times in the last five seasons. The 2023-24 season was an exception where they progressed further. This recent trend contrasts with their previous record of advancing from eight out of nine quarter-final ties.
Kompany expressed mixed emotions about their performance: "I think in the first game we showed a good Bayern Munich. I'm not talking about the result." He noted that despite having more scoring opportunities than Inter in Milan, they couldn't capitalise on them.
When asked if a busy schedule contributed to their injury woes, Kompany replied: "Unfortunately, I don't decide." He mentioned that numerous games and long journeys add pressure when key players are absent. Despite these hurdles, he believes Bayern did enough to win both matches.
The harsh reality for Bayern is missing out on playing the Champions League final at home this season. Kompany acknowledged this disappointment but remained proud of his team's efforts against Inter Milan.
