Konate Nearing Liverpool Contract Extension Amid Defender Commitment
Ibrahima Konate confirmed talks over a new Liverpool contract are nearing completion, easing concern about a possible exit. The defender’s current deal runs out at the end of June, and earlier reports linked Konate with a free transfer move to Real Madrid in the summer window.
The 26-year-old centre-back stressed that leaving Liverpool was never under consideration, even with outside interest and uncertainty over his contract. Konate indicated discussions with the club have been progressing for some time and suggested supporters should expect to see Konate at Anfield again next season.

Speaking after Liverpool’s Merseyside derby victory on Saturday, Konate explained how close both sides are to agreement. "There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement," said Konate after their Merseyside derby win on Saturday.
Konate then outlined how strongly Konate feels about staying at Anfield and how long discussions have been ongoing. "I think everyone wished for that for as soon as possible, but we are in a good way. For sure, there is a big chance that I'm here next season. This is what I've always wanted. I'm waiting to sort the contract but when everything is sorted you will have to ask [sporting director] Richard [Hughes] what I said to him in September, November before everyone talked about everything and he's going to say something to make everyone quiet. When he's going to reply, you will see. I just wish that."
Konate moved to Liverpool from RB Leipzig for 35m before the 2021-22 season and grew into a regular partner for Virgil van Dijk in central defence. Since arriving, Konate has played 178 matches in all competitions, collecting the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two EFL Cups.
Performance data underline Konate’s importance within Liverpool’s back line. Since joining the club, Konate ranks fifth among Premier League defenders for total duels won, with 906, and also fifth for aerial duels won, with 480. The players ahead of Konate in both categories have all featured in more games.
Konate’s negotiations come during a period of significant change for Liverpool’s squad. Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson are both set to depart in the upcoming summer, while Van Dijk has only one year remaining on the current contract. Konate’s anticipated extension therefore appears central to maintaining stability in Liverpool’s defence.
For Liverpool supporters, Konate’s comments provide clarity during an uncertain off-season. The French defender expects to finalise terms soon, and the club’s defensive rebuild now seems likely to continue with Konate as a core figure alongside Van Dijk for at least one more campaign.
