Ibrahima Konate Leaves Liverpool As Contract Expires: End Of An Era At Anfield
Ibrahima Konate has confirmed that the 2025-26 season is the defender’s last at Liverpool, with the contract set to expire this summer, adding another major change during a turbulent spell in which Arne Slot was dismissed despite previously guiding the club to the Premier League title.
Reports earlier in the week stated Konate would not agree fresh terms, and the centre-back, who joined from RB Leipzig in 2021, has now publicly confirmed the departure after a campaign of mixed performances, having played 183 matches and often partnered Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

Liverpool issued a formal announcement confirming the separation at the end of the deal, stating: "Konate will depart with our gratitude and appreciation for the contribution he made and everyone at the club wishes him the best for the future," while also highlighting that the defender leaves as a free agent in the coming months.
The club also reiterated the same message within the wider communication, emphasising thanks for the work across five seasons and underlining that "Konate will depart with our gratitude and appreciation for the contribution he made and everyone at the club wishes him the best for the future," as Liverpool closed another chapter in the defensive line.
Five years ago, I arrived as a young player with big dreams. Today, I leave with memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life, Konate wrote on Instagram. Representing this club has been an honour. We've shared incredible moments together. Highs and lows, trophies, challenges, lifelong friendships, and heartbreaking moments that will stay with us forever, none more painful than losing our brother Diogo [Jota]. Losing my father this year was one of the hardest periods of my life, but even through hardship, my commitment to this club never changed. During the toughest moments, I gave everything I had for this badge. To my team-mates, coaches, staff and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for helping me grow every single day. And to the supporters, thank you for your love, your energy, and your incredible support. Anfield is truly a special place, and playing in front of you was something I never took for granted. I am deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game. At that moment, I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. I love you all and will carry Liverpool with me wherever I go. This isn't an easy goodbye, but its time for a new challenge and a new chapter.
The statement from Konate reflects both professional and personal challenges, including the loss of Diogo Jota, which the defender described as a shared heartbreak, and the passing of Konate’s father earlier in the year, moments that shaped the final season but, according to Konate, never reduced commitment to the club.
Across those 183 matches for Liverpool, Konate became the French-born player with the most appearances in club history, featuring 154 times alongside Virgil van Dijk, with that pairing forming the main defensive partnership during several trophy-winning campaigns and different managerial spells at Anfield.
Konate collected several domestic honours during the stay in England, lifting the Premier League, FA Cup, two EFL Cups and the Community Shield, as Liverpool moved from title success under Slot to a disappointing fifth-place finish in 2025-26, ending 24 points worse off than the previous league triumph.

Speculation around the next move has already started, with Konate linked to Real Madrid, while Liverpool begin planning a defensive rebuild and search for a permanent replacement for Slot, who was removed from the head coach role after the sharp decline in league form following the earlier championship success.
The defender’s exit closes a five-year spell that included major silverware, a record appearance mark for a French-born player and significant emotional moments, leaving Liverpool with gratitude expressed on both sides as Konate prepares for what is described as a new challenge and a fresh chapter elsewhere.
