Brisbane, January 1: The withdrawal of Petra Kvitova through illness opened the door for Anett Kontaveit to reach the Brisbane International second round on Monday.

Kvitova - the 2011 champion in Brisbane - was unable to take to the court to face Kontaveit after coming down with a virus picked up on her way to Australia.

Kontaveit made short work of replacement Heather Watson, triumphing 6-0, 6-3, while there were also wins for Elina Svitolina and Johanna Konta.

However, there was disappointment for the home crowd when Ashleigh Barty was beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Lesia Tsurenko in the final match of the day.

Tsurenko is in the same quarter of the draw as second seed Karolina Pliskova and faces Kaia Kanepi in the next round.

Sixth seed Kristina Mladenovic was also knocked out by Belarusian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich, while Julia Goerges and Kirsten Flipkens were among four players to seal their progression to the second round of the Auckland Open - the latter at the expense of eighth seed Donna Vekic.
