Bangladesh will be playing the biggest match in their recent footballing history as they take on Kuwait in the semifinals of the SAFF Bangabandhu Championship at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday (July 1).
This is Bangladesh's first appearance in the stage in the last 14 years as the FIFA 192nd-ranked side defeated higher-ranked Maldives and Bhutan to reach the knockout stages. They finished second in Group B behind Lebanon, who won all their three group games and also defeated Bangladesh 2-0 through second-half goals.
The loss to Lebanon was followed by a spirited comeback win against the Maldives, who were leading 1-0 at one stage before Jamal Bhuyan and his side rallied to win the match 3-1. Shekh Morsalin and Rakib Hossain have been key to Bangladesh's wins as the duo also made the difference in another 3-1 win over Bhutan, who also went down after taking 1-0 lead in the game.
Shekh Morsalin, who scored late as a substitute against Maldives, scored the opening goal against the Himalayan side and then delivered the cross that led to an own goal. Rakib Hossain then scored in what was a big contender for the goal of the tournament as he scored the team's third goal from a zero angle.
Their rivals Kuwait, however, are the hot favourites to reach the final after topping Group A with hosts India in it. The Arab side played an ill-tempered 1-1 draw three days ago as the draw came through a late own goal from Anwar Ali after both sides were reduced to 10 men.
Kuwait booked their semifinal berth before the India match as they defeated Nepal and Pakistan with comfortable margins. The game against India was still crucial as they needed a draw at least to take the top spot and have the luxury to avoid Lebanon, who entered the tournament as the highest-ranked outfit.
