1 Ladakh FC: How a Woman’s Vision is Redefining Football in India's Northern Terrain | Exclusive

In the rugged, breathtaking heights of Ladakh, where the air is thin and the spirit indomitable, a new beacon of Indian football has emerged. 1 Ladakh FC, led by the passionate founder and owner Tsering Angmo, is set to make its grand debut in the prestigious Durand Cup, a proud moment not just for the club but for the entire Union Territory (UT).

In an exclusive and candid chat with MyKhel, Miss Angmo shares the inspiring journey of 1 Ladakh FC - from humble beginnings to professional football, against all odds.

Ladakh FC

The Seed of a Dream: From Association to Club

Miss Angmo's story begins with profound love and commitment to Ladakh's football scene. Alongside many young local players, she embraced the task of nurturing football culture in a region devoid of professional infrastructure but abundant in passion. She was a Wushu player herself but the love for football made her nurture the sport in her own abode.

"First, I started with an association - the Ladakh Football Association - and I am a founder," she tells us firmly.

The Ladakh Football Association's recognition by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was a turning point. "We got appellation with the All India Football Federation. Even AIFF gave us such a huge opportunity and helped us immensely for 3-4 years, they have given us a very good platform," she says gratefully.

Realizing the need to take football beyond amateur levels, Miss Angmo envisioned a professional club where local talent could shine. Meeting co-founder Shamim G and rallying support from the UT government and local council (LHBC) laid the foundation for Ladakh FC.

Ladakh's Unique Pitch: High Altitude Football Ground

Ladakh FC trains on a remarkable home ground, a football pitch perched at 11,000 feet adjacent to Leh airport, owned by the UT administration. "It will be the first high altitude ground in India, probably among the top in the world," Miss Angmo reveals with pride. This ground symbolizes the club's aspirations - high, rarefied, and resilient.

Growing Up with Football in Ladakh

Football's roots in Ladakh run deeper than one might expect. Miss Angmo recalls tales from the 1960s, when local legends including ministers found joy and identity in the game - often played on mud grounds without infrastructure. "People used to play football even in the 1960s," she shares. Her own childhood was steeped in football culture that, while raw and informal, ignited her passion.

Despite the region's historic connection to football, formal organisational efforts had lagged. "Since childhood, I always used to hear, we should go to All India Football Federation, but nobody worked properly," she sighs. Her entering the scene changed this narrative.

The Durand Cup: A Historic Milestone

The announcement that Ladakh FC would compete in the Durand Cup brought excitement and pride. "Durand Cup was very special, not only for me, but for my players also," Miss Angmo beams. Participation meant recognition on a national stage renowned for its rich history and competitive spirit.

Though the local players had limited exposure to top-tier leagues like the I-League or ISL, clever recruitment and expert coaching balanced the squad. Their coaching staff represents pan-India expertise - a head coach from Chennai, a goalkeeper coach from Hyderabad, and a physiotherapist from Delhi.

The support from the local administration has been unwavering, with the sports secretary and advocates enthusiastically backing the club's historic Durand Cup entry.

Overcoming Challenges: The Woman Behind Ladakh FC

Miss Angmo's journey is not just about football but also fierce perseverance in a society where women leaders in sports face skepticism and resistance.

"Being a woman is so difficult... people watching me walking, thinking what will she get? Is there anything she has to gain for herself?" she reflects honestly.

She shares candidly about societal hurdles and even political interference that have challenged her path. Yet, her passion for football reigns supreme.

"I live for football and it is everything. I'm so passionate," she admits with conviction. Her commitment saw her leave behind other pursuits and face financial and logistical struggles, such as managing expensive travel from Ladakh to other parts of India.

Funding comes partly through local government backing and partnerships with institutions like IMT Ghaziabad, which provides essential training camps. "We get sponsors. The local government is very helpful," she affirms.

The seeds of a sustainable football ecosystem are being sown with collaborative support. And Angmo says the struggle has been bearing fruits in recent times.

Vision Beyond the Horizon

Looking forward, Miss Angmo's vision is one of equality and growth. "I want equal boys and girls to represent Ladakh FC," she says passionately.

Expanding opportunities for women players is a priority, alongside giving the vast array of amateur Ladakhi players a professional pathway. The massive following of football in Ladakh is another reason for her to dream as the 1 Ladakh family aims to take the next big step.

Ladakh FC's immediate ambition is to enter the I-League - the gateway to the highest levels of Indian football. "Slowly, we will definitely try for the I-League," she promises.

In the Indian footballing scene, 1 Ladakh FC is the shining glimmer of hope. From the vast trans-Himalayan terrain to the prestigious Durand Cup, they have voyaged an undulating yet fulfilling path, the future should be bright, as long as Tsering Angmo spearheads the unit.
