LaFC Toluca Champions Cup Semi-Final: Son Heung-min Creates Two Chances As LAFC Edge Toluca 2-1
Son Heung-min produced two key assists as Los Angeles FC claimed a 2-1 first-leg victory over Toluca in the Champions Cup semi-final. Son created the winner in stoppage time for Nkosi Tafari at BMO Stadium, restoring LAFC’s advantage after Toluca had equalised. The result gave LAFC a narrow edge before the return match in Mexico.
The contest appeared set for a draw when Liga MX leaders Toluca struck in the 73rd minute. Jesus Angulo collected a pass from Paulinho and guided a precise shot beyond Hugo Lloris to level the tie. That goal cancelled out Timothy Tillman’s opener and briefly shifted momentum towards the visitors.

Son had already played a major role in LAFC’s first goal. Earlier in the second half, Son flicked the ball into space on the edge of the penalty area. Tillman controlled calmly and drove a low finish into the bottom-left corner at the third attempt, after wasting two earlier chances in promising positions.
The late twist arrived in the 91st minute, when LAFC won a free-kick on the flank. Son delivered a deep, curling cross into the crowded area. Tafari timed the run and met the ball with a firm header, steering it past the Toluca goalkeeper. The goal gave LAFC a slender but valuable lead in the semi-final tie.
Lloris had kept LAFC in the contest during a lively first half. Toluca created several openings, but Lloris produced a series of sharp saves to prevent an early breakthrough. At the other end, Tillman twice failed to convert good opportunities, while Jacob Shaffelburg thought he had scored, only for VAR to rule the effort offside after a review.
Data from the Champions Cup underlined Son’s importance for LAFC this season. Son has now provided seven assists in the competition for LAFC, which is five more than any team-mate. That total is also two higher than any other player in the tournament, highlighting Son’s consistent creativity from attacking positions.
Both chances Son fashioned on Wednesday ended as assists, showing efficiency in LAFC’s attacking play. Son also completed two of three attempted dribbles, contributing to territorial pressure. The free-kick that produced Tafari’s decisive header carried 0.58 expected goals from that chance alone, nearly half of LAFC’s total xG of 1.26 in the match.
The first-leg win left LAFC with a slim cushion ahead of the second leg against Toluca. Son’s two decisive contributions, Tafari’s late header and Lloris’ first-half saves combined to shape a tight encounter. Toluca’s away goal and strong league form suggested a demanding return meeting, but LAFC travelled with a lead earned through clinical moments.
