Bruno Lage Expresses Interest In Joao Felix Returning To Benfica Amid Financial Challenges

Benfica head coach Bruno Lage is eager to re-sign Joao Felix from Chelsea. Despite financial hurdles, both parties are interested in making a deal happen.

Benfica's head coach, Bruno Lage, is eager to see Joao Felix return to the club. However, he recognises the financial hurdles involved in acquiring the Chelsea forward. Joao Felix initially departed Benfica in 2019 for Atletico Madrid in a deal valued at 126 million. Despite this significant move, he struggled to secure a permanent spot under Diego Simeone.

After his stint with Atletico Madrid, Joao Felix was loaned to Chelsea and later joined Barcelona for the 2023-24 season. The Portuguese forward then made a permanent switch to Chelsea last year but failed to make a significant impact. He spent the latter part of the season on loan at AC Milan.

Lage Keen on Joao Felix's Benfica Return

Joao Felix's future at Chelsea seems uncertain as Enzo Maresca excluded him from the Club World Cup squad and assigned his number 14 shirt to new recruit Dario Essugo. This situation has piqued Benfica's interest, with Lage expressing his wish to bring Felix back to his childhood club.

Lage stated, "Joao has already spoken about this situation, all the players would like to return to Benfica." He emphasised that both parties need to align their desires for a reunion. "We have to create the opportunity, and they have to show that they want to come to Benfica," Lage added.

The financial aspect plays a crucial role in any potential deal. Joao Felix left Benfica for 120 million years ago, and now there are costs involved, whether it's a loan or a share of the transfer fee. Additionally, the player's salary is another consideration.

Felix's performance at Chelsea was limited; he started only three matches before being loaned out to Milan. During his time there, he scored just two goals in 15 appearances. This contrasts sharply with his last season at Benfica when he netted 15 goals and provided seven assists in 26 games during the 2018-19 season.

Lage acknowledged these challenges by saying, "There is a lot of desire, but there is also the financial aspect; it is on both sides." The coach remains hopeful that an agreement can be reached if both parties are willing to compromise on financial terms.

Benfica's interest in re-signing Joao Felix highlights their commitment to bringing back talent that once thrived within their ranks. While financial constraints pose challenges, both parties appear motivated to explore possibilities for a reunion.
