Lamine Yamal Controversy: Barcelona Star Criticised by Israel Minister Over Palestine Flag Gesture

Israel’s defense minister has criticised Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal for waving a Palestinian flag during Spanish league title celebrations in Barcelona on Monday, calling the act an attempt to “incite hate” against Israel, amid the continuing war in Gaza and strong reactions across Europe.

Israel Katz wrote on X on Thursday that “Lamine Yamal chose to incite hate against Israel while our soldiers combat the terrorist organization Hamas, an organization that massacred, raped and burned Jewish children, women and the elderly on Oct. 7, (2023).”

Yamal flag gesture sparks international debate

Flag display during Barcelona title parade

The 18-year-old winger waved a large Palestinian flag from an open-top bus during Barcelona’s victory parade through the city. Local authorities said some 750,000 people lined the streets to celebrate the league title, which the club clinched the previous day.

Yamal, who is Muslim, later posted photos on Instagram that showed him holding the Palestinian flag during the celebrations. The images drew strong responses online, underlining how the Gaza war continues to affect football and other global sports events.

Spanish Government Defends Barcelona Forward

Spain’s government has been highly critical of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which have killed tens of thousands of Palestinians following the 2023 Hamas surprise attack. That stance has strong public support, and has shaped many political and cultural debates inside the country.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who has previously urged that Israel be banned from sports events over its actions in Gaza, defended Yamal on social media. Sánchez wrote on X that those calling the flag display hatred had “lost their minds” or been blinded by “ignominy.”

Sánchez added that “Lamine has simply expressed the solidarity with Palestine that millions of Spaniards feel. Yet another reason to be proud of him.” His comments placed Spain’s leader at odds with Israel Katz over how to interpret the young player’s gesture.

Wider Protests Over Gaza War In Sports Fraternity

The Gaza conflict has triggered protests in several sports, including football, cycling and basketball. Last year’s Vuelta cycling race in Spain saw repeated disruptions by protesters who opposed the participation of an Israeli-backed cycling team in the three-week grand tour.

Spain is also among five countries boycotting this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, in protest at Israel’s inclusion during the Gaza war. The political split has now reached Spanish football, at a time when Yamal is expected to star for Spain at next month’s World Cup in North America.
