Laporta Insists Gundogan’s Barcelona Exit Was Tactical, Not Financial

Joan Laporta, Barcelona's president, asserts Ilkay Gundogan's departure was a strategic choice linked to Dani Olmo's signing and not due to financial constraints. Despite Gundogan hinting at economic reasons for his return to Manchester City, Laporta emphasizes the move was purely for sporting considerations.

Joan Laporta, Barcelona's president, has stated that Ilkay Gundogan's departure was a sporting decision rather than a financial one. This comes despite Gundogan's claims suggesting otherwise. Gundogan joined Barcelona as a free agent last year after aiding Manchester City in winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble. However, he returned to Manchester City last month.

In his farewell message on social media, Gundogan mentioned that Barcelona's financial issues contributed to his return to England. The club has struggled with LaLiga’s strict salary cap rules recently. Reports indicated that without Gundogan's exit, Barcelona would have been unable to register new signing Dani Olmo.

Gundogan Exit: Tactical Decision

Laporta refuted these claims, explaining that Olmo's arrival from RB Leipzig made Gundogan's role in Hansi Flick’s tactical plans unclear. "The decision on Gundogan’s departure was not made because of economic factors," Laporta told reporters. "He was an excellent player and person during his time here. With all due respect, we decided on a sporting level."

Barcelona has started their first campaign under Flick impressively, winning all four of their matches and leading LaLiga by four points over Real Madrid. Historically, the Blaugrana have begun 10 seasons with four straight victories and won the title in nine of those instances. They only failed in the 2013-14 season when Atletico Madrid were champions.

Robert Lewandowski leads the goalscoring charts with four goals in as many games, one ahead of teammate Raphinha who scored a hat-trick in Saturday’s 7-0 victory over Real Valladolid. Laporta revealed that Lewandowski offered to take a wage cut to help Barcelona comply with LaLiga’s rules.

"I see Robert as more motivated than ever," Laporta said. "Robert needed this new boost; he is in very good physical shape and looks very excited." He added that Lewandowski is committed to the club and even offered his contract to help reach 'fair play'. "I appreciated it very much but told him it was not necessary," Laporta noted.

Barcelona’s Strong Start

The team has shown strong performance under Flick’s management, boasting a perfect record so far this season. This start has raised hopes among fans for another successful campaign. The historical data supports this optimism as Barcelona has often gone on to win the league after such strong starts.

The Blaugrana are aiming for another title this season and their early form suggests they are well on track. With key players like Lewandowski showing commitment and motivation, the team appears poised for success.

Barcelona's impressive start underlines their potential this season. With four wins from four games, they are setting a high standard early on. Fans will be hopeful that this momentum continues throughout the campaign.
