Late Heartbreak For India As Hong Kong Snatch Dramatic Asian Cup Qualifier Win

By MyKhel Staff

India's aspirations for AFC Asian Cup qualification suffered a significant setback today, as they fell to a dramatic 1-0 defeat against Hong Kong at Kai Tak Sports Park. Despite creating several promising opportunities, Manolo Marquez's side was undone by a 95th-minute penalty from Stefan Pereira, leaving them with just one point from two Group C matches.

Marquez made a bold decision in his starting XI, opting to bench veteran striker Sunil Chhetri in favor of Ashique Kuruniyan as the central forward.

In the early stages, India controlled the midfield, though their most notable chance came from a set-piece. Sandesh Jhingan connected with Brandon Fernandes' curled delivery, but his scuffed shot was ultimately inconsequential due to an offside call.

The Blue Tigers squandered their clearest opportunity in the 35th minute. Following Brandon's excellent press, the ball found Liston Colaco on the left wing. His precise early cross met Ashique Kuruniyan, who misjudged his run and stumbled, sending his shot wide with an open goal at his mercy.

The second half began with Ashique again coming close, his shot just five minutes after the restart flying narrowly wide. Chhetri was introduced on the hour mark to inject more attacking prowess, and the Indian legend nearly set up a winner with a clever reverse pass to Liston, whose off-balance shot went wide. Amidst India's attacking efforts, Vishal Kaith made a crucial save from Oliver Gerbig, followed by a goal-line clearance from Asish Rai. Chhetri himself had a late chance after Lallianzuala Chhangte's superb run and cut-back, but his goal-bound flick was heroically blocked by Leon Jones.

Just when the match seemed destined for a goalless draw, a long ball into the Indian box in injury time changed everything. Hong Kong substitute Michael Udebuluzor challenged for the pass, prompting Indian goalkeeper Vishal Kaith to rush out. Kaith misjudged the ball, completely missing it and colliding with Udebuluzor, resulting in an undeniable penalty. Stefan Pereira calmly stepped up, delivering a composed penalty past a stranded Kaith into the bottom corner, igniting wild celebrations at Kai Tak Stadium for Hong Kong's inaugural victory in the group.

This 1-0 defeat, coupled with Singapore's 2-1 win over Bangladesh in the other Group C fixture, pushes India to the bottom of the table. With four matches remaining, India now faces a daunting challenge, as only the group winners secure direct qualification for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
