Lautaro Martinez Calls On Inter Midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu To Leave After Club World Cup Exit

Following Inter's elimination from the Club World Cup, Lautaro Martinez has called for Hakan Calhanoglu and other players who do not wish to stay at the club to leave. His comments reflect a desire for commitment among teammates.

Inter Milan's recent exit from the Club World Cup has sparked a strong reaction from Lautaro Martinez. The team was eliminated after a 2-0 defeat to Fluminense, with goals from German Cano and Hercules. This loss marked Fluminense as the second non-European club to reach the quarter-finals, following Palmeiras. Brazilian clubs have now secured more wins than losses against European teams in this year's tournament.

Martinez expressed his frustration post-match, highlighting his dissatisfaction with some teammates' commitment. "It definitely hurts; this was our last target, with the little strength we had. We left everything out there," he said. He urged players who lack dedication to leave, emphasizing the importance of fighting for team goals.

Despite being a key player, Martinez has faced challenges during the tournament. He has taken more shots and hit the woodwork more than any other player but only scored twice in the group stage. His leadership role as captain is evident as he strives to maintain Inter's competitive spirit.

Martinez Tells Calhanoglu to Leave Inter

Inter president Giuseppe Marotta later suggested that Martinez's comments were directed at Hakan Calhanoglu. Calhanoglu reportedly wants to join Galatasaray and missed the match due to a calf injury. Marotta stated, "Lautaro's intervention was significant, as the captain. It must motivate us and bring a sense of belonging."

Marotta acknowledged that finishing second is not a failure in sports and emphasized that it can still be an achievement. He mentioned that many strong competitors have finished second in recent years. Regarding Calhanoglu, Marotta said they would discuss his future with him soon.

"When a player shows that he wants to leave, he will find the door wide open," Marotta added, indicating that they are open to letting Calhanoglu go if he wishes. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges within Inter Milan as they navigate player dynamics and team goals.

The team's performance in this tournament reflects broader issues within Inter Milan regarding player commitment and future planning. As they regroup after this setback, addressing these internal challenges will be crucial for their success moving forward.
