Leah Williamson Set To Make First Arsenal Appearance Since Euro 2025 Final Against Twente

Leah Williamson is poised to return to action for Arsenal in the Women's Champions League after recovering from knee surgery. Her presence comes as the team seeks to improve their performance this season.

Leah Williamson is set to potentially return to the field for Arsenal against Twente in the Women's Champions League on Tuesday. Renee Slegers confirmed this development, marking Williamson's first possible appearance since the Euro 2025 final. Arsenal's start to their title defence has been mixed, with two wins and two losses placing them 10th in an 18-team league.

The Gunners are currently positioned fourth in the Women's Super League, trailing leaders Manchester City by eight points. This season has been challenging without their captain, Leah Williamson, who has been absent due to knee surgery following the Lionesses' European Championship victory over Spain in July.

Williamson Returns for Arsenal's Match Against Twente

During that final, Sarina Wiegman's team emerged victorious with a 3-1 penalty win after a 1-1 draw. Despite missing her penalty shot, Williamson played a crucial role throughout the tournament. Last season, she made 19 appearances in the Women's Super League, starting in 17 of those matches.

Williamson's previous campaign was cut short by an anterior cruciate ligament tear, limiting her to just nine games in the 2023-24 season. However, she returned strongly and played a full match as Arsenal defeated Barcelona to secure their second European title in May. Slegers expressed delight at having her back in contention after being an unused substitute in Arsenal's recent 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

Slegers commented on Williamson's recovery: "Of course, it was unfortunate for her to sustain that injury at the Euros and she had to work hard to come back from it." She added that Williamson is now in excellent form and has spent considerable time on the pitch.

Slegers' Historic Matchup

The international break may have delayed her return due to limited opportunities for full-team training sessions. However, Slegers assured that Williamson is ready and will be included in the squad against Twente. Although she won't start, she will be available for some minutes during the game.

This match marks a significant moment for Slegers as she becomes the first Dutch manager to face a Dutch club in a Women's Champions League match. Meanwhile, Twente has struggled against English teams in previous encounters, drawing once and losing twice.

Slegers praised the current squad's performance during Williamson's absence but expressed excitement about her return: "She is doing well and did the full session again today." Her presence is expected to bolster Arsenal's efforts as they aim for success both domestically and internationally.
