Lee Carsley praised his England team for their performance in his first match as manager. The interim boss led England to a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League at Dublin's Aviva Stadium. This victory marked the first time since May 1964 that Ireland lost a home game to England.
Carsley credited his players, particularly Jack Grealish and Declan Rice, who scored in the first half. "The lads have to take a lot of credit, all of the credit. I think we've showed we've got some real talent and we can be really pleased with the clean sheet as well," he told ITV. He added that the team displayed some promising tactics.

Grealish, recalled after missing out on the Euros squad, doubled England's lead in the 26th minute. Carsley praised both Grealish and Rice for their goals: "I thought they [Rice and Grealish] took their goals really well. Really well-worked moves and brilliant finishes."
The new manager also started Anthony Gordon on the left wing. Gordon had struggled for playing time under Gareth Southgate during Euro 2024 but impressed Carsley with his performance against Ireland. "On a really dry sticky pitch, it's not ideal for dribblers but I thought Anthony was a real threat," said Carsley.
Gordon managed to get all three of his shots on target and made two key passes during the match. Carsley noted Gordon's continued form from last season, highlighting him as a dangerous player.
Despite England's dominance, Carsley acknowledged Ireland's resilience. "I think you've got to give Ireland credit as well; they are very resilient," he reflected. He mentioned that Ireland closed gaps effectively, making it harder for England to break through in the second half.
The win ended Ireland's four-game unbeaten run against England at home (W1 D3). Although England could have capitalised more on their dominance, Carsley felt comfortable with the 2-0 scoreline.
"We found it a little bit more difficult to get through them but at 2-0 we were quite comfortable," he concluded.
