Ethan Ampadu Signs Four-Year Contract Extension As Leeds United Captain

Ethan Ampadu commits long term to Leeds United after signing a new four-year contract that runs until 2030. The Leeds captain, aged 25, was due to enter the final year of the previous deal. The decision gives Daniel Farke stability in midfield and defence, as Leeds plan their next phase after survival in the 2025-26 Premier League season.

Ampadu has quickly become central to Leeds since arriving from Chelsea in 2023. The Wales international has played 126 games in all competitions, scoring three times and supplying three assists. Ampadu led the team that won promotion from the Championship in 2024-25 and then helped Leeds secure 14th place in the Premier League the following campaign.

Across all competitions last season, Ampadu topped Leeds metrics in several areas. Ampadu made more tackles, with 53, than any team-mate. Ampadu also won 214 duels, again the highest figure in the squad. Passing numbers underlined influence in possession, with 1,753 completed passes, the most by any Leeds player during the season.

Premier League data highlights the same dependability. Ampadu started every one of the 35 league matches played for Leeds in 2025-26. Only Brenden Aaronson featured more often in the top flight for the club, with 37 appearances. Ampadu scored once, registering a first Premier League goal in a 4-1 home win against Crystal Palace in December, on the 41st competition appearance.

Promotion marked the first major step of the current project. Ampadu and Leeds reached the Premier League by winning the Championship title in 2024-25. The following season, Leeds stayed up and finished 14th. For a club newly returned to the division, avoiding relegation across the early campaigns was identified as a crucial target.

Reflecting on the new deal, Ampadu told the club website: "It is very exciting times, and I am very pleased to have it sorted and out of the way. And now we can concentrate on hopefully building on what has been, especially the last two years, something very positive."

Ampadu then looked back on the journey from the second tier. "We obviously knew that starting from the Championship the aim was to get promoted. We always had the ambition that we were going to achieve that. So, to have the second year and become champions and enjoy that with the whole city was amazing. And then, especially last year, to be one of the teams to stay up for the first couple of seasons was massive. That was the target."

Ethan Ampadu Leeds United future and club reaction

Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe discussed the agreement on BBC Radio Leeds and underlined Ampadu’s importance. Marathe said: "It is great to have our captain locked up and here. He represents everything we want on and off the pitch and I think it's a great signal to the market, in advance to the transfer window as well, about what we're about as a club."

The length of the new contract means Leeds intend to keep Ampadu as a core figure through the next stages of development. With promotion already secured once and Premier League safety achieved, the club now has stability around the captain’s future. That clarity supports planning for recruitment and squad balance for the seasons leading towards 2030.
