Leeds United: Calvert-Lewin Praises Fans After Stoppage-time Winner Against Brighton

Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck a 96th-minute winner to give Leeds United a 1-0 victory over Brighton, extending an unbeaten Premier League sequence to eight matches. The late goal at Elland Road kept Leeds clear of the relegation battle, while Brighton’s push for European qualification suffered serious damage after wasting several chances across a dominant but fruitless display.

The England forward has led Leeds United’s attack across 2025-26, scoring 14 league goals, the highest tally in the squad. Calvert-Lewin has also netted in three consecutive league matches, matching Morgan Gibbs-White and Ollie Watkins as the joint-top English scorers in the division this season, and Calvert-Lewin has linked that productivity to the backing received from the Elland Road crowd.

Calvert-Lewin hails Leeds fans after late winner

Calvert-Lewin’s decisive strike arrived at 95:02, the latest winning goal Leeds United have recorded in a Premier League match since detailed timings have been tracked from 2006-07. It was also Leeds’ first effort on target in the game, underlining how Daniel Farke’s side absorbed pressure and then converted their single clear opening in added time.

The victory also placed Leeds United in a small statistical group. From 2003-04 onwards, they became only the fourth team to win a Premier League fixture 1-0 with their only shot on target coming in the 90th minute or later, following similar late wins for West Ham, Huddersfield and West Brom in previous seasons.

Calvert-Lewin described how the relationship with Leeds United supporters has shaped the campaign, especially at Elland Road’s final home fixture of the season. Speaking to Sky Sports, Calvert-Lewin said, "I've loved every minute of this season. I'm so grateful to play in front of these fans. You see the reception I get when I score, the whole stadium is singing my name. It's a great feeling for everyone involved."

Calvert-Lewin added context about the occasion and the team’s approach under pressure, noting the presence of families in the stands and the need to stay patient on a drying pitch. Calvert-Lewin said, "All our families are here, as is the case for the final home game of the season. Games like this, you've got to hang in there. The pitch dried up a little bit and I think that helped me. It shows the mentality we have got, and we want to try and finish as high as possible up the table."

Daniel Farke highlighted the significance of the result for Leeds United’s season, pointing to both the resilience shown without the ball and the importance of the three points. Farke told Sky Sports, "I love my players and I always believe in them. These are a priceless three points for us. It sums up our season perfectly. It was such a difficult game, we had to defend, but we stayed in the game."

Leeds United frustrate Brighton’s European push

Brighton created the better openings throughout the contest but failed to convert. Pascal Gross, Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gomez all missed promising chances in the final third, as Brighton finished with 19 attempts. Only three times have Brighton produced more shots in an away Premier League match without scoring, most recently at Brentford in April 2024, when Brighton registered 24 efforts.

Fabian Hurzeler reflected on Brighton’s missed opportunities and one decisive lapse against Leeds United. Hurzeler said, "We could have had an easier day if we had used our chances and scored. It was one mistake by us. That happens. If there weren't mistakes there would never be goals. We did a lot of things right today. It was quite open until the end. One match to go... that's why we stay positive."

With one league fixture remaining, Leeds United extended their longest unbeaten Premier League sequence since November 2001 and strengthened their position in the table, driven by Calvert-Lewin’s scoring run and a disciplined defence. Brighton, despite strong underlying numbers at Elland Road, face a tougher route towards European qualification after failing to turn pressure into goals.
