Leeds United's Illan Meslier Mistakes Cost Points As Burnley Closes In On Championship Promotion

Leeds United faced a setback in their Championship promotion quest due to Illan Meslier's errors during a draw with Swansea City. Burnley's victory over Bristol City further complicates Leeds' position.

Leeds United missed the opportunity to reclaim the top spot in the Championship after a 2-2 draw against Swansea City. This result, combined with Burnley's 1-0 win over Bristol City, has dented Leeds' hopes for automatic promotion. Daniel Farke's team now faces increased pressure as they trail Sheffield United by two points and are level with Burnley.

Illan Meslier's errors were costly for Leeds at Elland Road. Despite taking an early lead through Brenden Aaronson's goal, Meslier's mistakes allowed Swansea to equalise twice. Josh Tymon's penalty was saved by Meslier, but Ben Cabango hit the post soon after. Harry Darling capitalised on Meslier's fumble to score from a corner, marking the goalkeeper's third error leading to a goal this season.

Meslier's Errors Impact Leeds' Promotion Chances

Wilfried Gnonto appeared to secure victory for Leeds with a late goal, but Swansea responded in stoppage time. Zan Vipotnik's shot slipped under Meslier, resulting in a dramatic equaliser. Leeds had previously won their last four league games against Swansea and six consecutive matches against Welsh teams before this encounter.

Burnley maintained their strong form with a narrow win over Bristol City. Zian Flemming's stunning free-kick secured all three points for Scott Parker's side. Despite having 14 shots and an expected goals (xG) of 1.86, Burnley couldn't add to their tally. Their defence remained solid, achieving their 21st clean sheet in 26 games without conceding a single shot on target.

Middlesbrough boosted their promotion hopes by defeating Oxford United 2-1. Michal Halik gave Oxford the lead, but Kelechi Iheanacho equalised shortly after halftime. Neto Borges then scored with an audacious backheel to secure victory for Middlesbrough. This win marks their first home comeback since April 2023 and moves them level on points with West Brom.

Stoke City improved their survival chances with a convincing 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers. Junior Tchamadeu played a key role, assisting Bae Jun-Ho's opener before scoring himself just before halftime. Million Manhoef added another goal late on, while Yang Min-hyeok scored a consolation for QPR.

Statistical Insights

Leeds had been confident of success against Swansea, given their recent record against Welsh teams. However, they struggled as Swansea recorded more xG (1.99) compared to Leeds' 1.75 and had only one fewer shot on target (six compared to seven). Meanwhile, Burnley's unbeaten streak extended to 26 matches (16 wins and 10 draws), marking their longest run without defeat since a similar streak between September 1920 and March 2021.

The Championship race remains tight as teams jostle for promotion spots and fight relegation battles. With several fixtures remaining, every point is crucial in determining final standings.
