Aaronson And James Propel Leeds United To Season's First Victory Over Sheffield Wednesday

Brenden Aaronson and Daniel James scored to give Leeds United their first win of the season against Sheffield Wednesday with a 2-0 victory. Aaronson's early goal and James' finish highlighted the match.

Leeds United secured their first win of the new season with a 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday. Brenden Aaronson and Daniel James scored on either side of half-time to seal the win. Aaronson netted his second league goal early, while James added another with a fine finish, marking his 30th goal involvement for the club.

Mateo Joseph was instrumental in Leeds' success, testing Sheffield Wednesday's goalkeeper James Beadle within the first five minutes. His persistence paid off in the 24th minute when Aaronson converted a left-footed shot after Joseph was fouled in the penalty area. Despite seven shots in the first half, Leeds couldn't extend their lead before halftime.

Leeds United Wins Against Sheffield

Joseph continued to shine in the second half, setting up James for Leeds' second goal. His precise pass allowed James to sprint past the Owls' defence and lob the ball over Beadle. This goal marked Leeds' second strike within the first 15 minutes of the second half this season, with only Watford having more early second-half goals.

Despite not scoring, Joseph was pivotal for Leeds, filling the gap left by Georginio Rutter. He registered four shots and had seven touches in the opposition box, achieving an expected goals (xG) of 0.3, only surpassed by James' xG of 0.46. His performance highlighted his importance to Farke's side.

The victory moved Leeds up to fourth place in the early season standings ahead of Saturday's Championship fixtures. The team's attacking prowess was evident throughout the match, showcasing their potential for the rest of the season.

Aaronson and James Shine

Aaronson opened the scoring with a well-taken left-footed effort after Joseph won a penalty. This marked Aaronson's second league goal of the season. James then sealed the victory with a delicate lob over Beadle, bringing his total goal involvements for Leeds to 30.

The visitors dominated early on at Hillsborough, with Joseph testing Beadle within five minutes. Their relentless pressure resulted in Aaronson's opener in the 24th minute. Despite several attempts, they couldn't add to their tally before halftime but quickly doubled their lead after the break through James.

Leeds' Early Season Form

Before this match, Leeds had not won in their last four Championship games. However, their quality shone through against Sheffield Wednesday. The team's attacking threat was evident from the start, with Joseph playing a crucial role despite not scoring himself.

The Welshman's strike was significant as it was only Leeds' second goal within the first 15 minutes of any second half this season. Watford is currently leading with three such goals.

The win provided a much-needed boost for Leeds as they climbed to fourth place in the standings ahead of upcoming Championship matches.
