Bayer Leverkusen's hopes of closing the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich were dashed after a 2-2 draw against Leipzig. Edmond Tapsoba's late own goal saw Xabi Alonso's team lose a 2-0 lead at Red Bull Arena, leaving them six points behind Bayern, who defeated Freiburg 2-1. The match seemed in Leverkusen's favour when they opened the scoring in the 19th minute.
Patrik Schick capitalised on a rebound after Florian Wirtz's shot hit the post following an impressive solo run. Wirtz was instrumental again as Leverkusen doubled their advantage in the 36th minute. He set up Aleix Garcia for a simple finish after Peter Gulacsi deflected his initial attempt onto the post. However, Leipzig reduced the deficit before halftime with a David Raum free-kick.

In the second half, Benjamin Sesko came close to levelling for Leipzig but was denied from close range. Yet, the hosts managed to equalise six minutes from time when Tapsoba inadvertently turned a cross past Lukas Hradecky. This result ended Leverkusen's 12-match winning streak across all competitions.
Despite this setback, Leverkusen remains unbeaten in 26 consecutive away league matches, only surpassed by Bayern's record of 33 between 2012 and 2014. Meanwhile, Lukas Hradecky has not lost in his last 50 Bundesliga appearances, joining Jerome Boateng as the only players to achieve this feat.
Florian Wirtz continued to shine this season, contributing directly to 18 Bundesliga goals so far. Patrik Schick also maintained his excellent form by increasing his goal tally to 13 since November 8. Only Alexander Isak has scored more across Europe's top five leagues during this period with 14 goals.
Leverkusen will aim to bounce back and maintain their strong away form as they continue their pursuit of Bayern Munich at the top of the table. Their resilience on the road remains a key factor in their campaign as they strive for success in Germany's top flight competition.
