Bayer Leverkusen Wins DFL-Supercup Against Stuttgart In Dramatic Penalty Shootout

Ten-man Bayer Leverkusen overcame Stuttgart in a thrilling penalty shootout, winning the DFL-Supercup. Despite reduced numbers, Leverkusen showcased their championship mettle under Xabi Alonso's leadership.

Ten-man Bayer Leverkusen triumphed over Stuttgart 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regular time to clinch the DFL-Supercup on Saturday. Lukas Hradecky saved Frans Kratzig's penalty, and Silas missed his shot, securing Leverkusen's third trophy under Xabi Alonso. Patrik Schick's late equaliser had forced the game into penalties.

Leverkusen, who only lost once last season, took an early lead within 11 minutes. Edmond Tapsoba headed towards goal, and Victor Boniface nudged the ball over the line. However, Stuttgart equalised four minutes later through Enzo Millot in the first German curtain-raiser not featuring Bayern Munich in 13 years.

Leverkusen Wins Supercup

The match saw a significant turn when Martin Terrier was sent off for a studs-up challenge in the 37th minute, reducing Leverkusen to ten men. Despite this disadvantage, they managed to hold their ground against Stuttgart's increasing pressure.

Stuttgart hit the woodwork three times before taking the lead in the 63rd minute. Substitute Deniz Undav scored from a Kratzig cutback just seconds after coming on. Yet, Leverkusen’s determination shone through as Schick connected with an Alejandro Grimaldo pass to level the score two minutes from time.

Throughout the match, Leverkusen had to adapt to playing with ten men for nearly an hour. They maintained only 34.3% possession but remained dangerous on counterattacks, managing 12 shots with an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.49 compared to Stuttgart’s 1.37.

Penalty Shootout Drama

The penalty shootout saw Leverkusen keep their composure, scoring all four of their penalties. Hradecky’s save from Kratzig and Silas’s miss sealed their victory. This win marks a strong start to their second full campaign under Alonso, aiming for more silverware.

Leverkusen’s ability to perform under pressure was evident as they secured another trophy despite being a man down for much of the match. Their resilience and tactical adaptability were key factors in their success.

This victory adds to Leverkusen’s impressive record under Alonso, showcasing their potential for continued success in upcoming competitions.
