Leverkusen Requires A Miracle To Advance In Champions League Quarters, Xabi Alonso States

Bayer Leverkusen's coach Xabi Alonso asserts that his team needs a miracle to progress in the Champions League after losing 3-0 to Bayern Munich. The match saw key mistakes and a red card hinder their performance.

Bayer Leverkusen's head coach, Xabi Alonso, expressed his belief that advancing to the Champions League quarter-finals will require a miracle. This follows their 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the round of 16. During the match, Nordi Mukiele was sent off in the second half, and Harry Kane scored a penalty in the 75th minute, adding to Leverkusen's woes.

Alonso highlighted how crucial moments went against them, including the red card and penalty. "The second goal, the red card and the penalty, everything went in Bayern's favour. That's why we got this result," he told DAZN. He emphasised that controlling such situations better is vital for future success.

Leverkusen Needs Miracle for Champions League Progress

Despite the setback, Alonso remains hopeful about football's unpredictable nature. "We've seen that there are always big miracles in football and we almost need one now," he remarked. With a home game still to play, he believes anything is possible.

Bayern Munich's head coach, Vincent Kompany, is not letting complacency set in despite their commanding lead. He stressed the importance of maintaining focus ahead of their trip to Leverkusen for the second leg next week. "It's the first half. We still have to get into the second game," Kompany stated.

Kompany is determined to keep his team grounded and prepared for any challenges ahead. "There's zero percent thinking about the course of the game or anything else," he said, highlighting their commitment to staying calm and ready for what lies ahead.

Harry Kane's penalty success has been remarkable since missing one at the 2022 World Cup against France. He has successfully converted his last 30 penalties across all competitions—21 for Bayern Munich, six for England, and three for Spurs.

Leverkusen faces an uphill battle as they prepare for their home fixture against Bayern Munich. The team must deliver a mature performance to overturn their deficit and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
