Leverkusen Miss Champions League After Final-day 1-1 Draw With Hamburg
Bayer Leverkusen will play Europa League football next season after a 1-1 draw with Hamburg ended hopes of reaching the Champions League. Kasper Hjulmand's team required victory at BayArena and favourable results elsewhere, but the single point confirmed a fifth-placed finish in the Bundesliga standings.
Stuttgart made Leverkusen's task harder by drawing 2-2 with Eintracht Frankfurt to secure fourth spot. Even a Leverkusen win would not have changed the final top-four picture, as Hoffenheim failed to capitalise and stay in contention, losing 4-0 against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Leverkusen dominated the underlying numbers yet could not turn that control into three points against Hamburg. The hosts produced an expected goals figure of 3.32, compared with Hamburg's 1.79. Despite that advantage, Leverkusen saw a sequence of six consecutive Bundesliga home wins over Hamburg brought to an end.

Set-pieces again played a key role for Hjulmand's side, who earned a point with their 23rd league goal from dead-ball situations this season. Defensive concerns remained for Hamburg, whose streak without a clean sheet stretched to 14 matches, matching Koln for the longest active run in the division.
The decisive moments began midway through the first half when Patrik Schick won a penalty after a foul by Jordan Torunarigha. Schick took responsibility from the spot, but Sander Tangvik dived correctly and kept the effort out, giving Hamburg an early lift.
Hamburg then stunned the home crowd just after the hour mark. Fabio Vieira collected the ball near the edge of the area and struck cleanly beyond the goalkeeper from outside the box, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead against the run of play.
Leverkusen responded 12 minutes from time as pressure finally told from another set-piece. Aleix Garcia delivered a free-kick into the box, Jarell Quansah met it with a header, and the ball deflected heavily off Nicolai Remberg before crossing the line for the equaliser.
Alex Grimaldo almost produced a late winner during stoppage time with a direct free-kick. Tangvik reacted sharply to parry the attempt, and Hamburg survived the final seconds as Leverkusen's domestic season closed with shared points rather than a Champions League place.
