Bayer Leverkusen's coach, Kasper Hjulmand, praised his team's resilience after they secured a 1-0 victory against Benfica in the Champions League. Despite a recent 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich and a five-match winless streak in the Champions League, Leverkusen managed to bounce back. Patrik Schick scored the decisive goal in the 65th minute, marking their seventh win under Hjulmand's leadership.

Hjulmand highlighted the youth and inexperience of his squad, noting their ability to withstand pressure from Benfica. "It was a very tough game," he said. "We played our third away game in seven days with Europe's youngest team." He acknowledged that while there is room for improvement, the victory was satisfying. The team featured three 19-year-olds and had only four or five experienced players on the field.

The coach expressed pride in his players' character and teamwork, emphasizing their potential for future success. He stated, "We showed character, talent and great team spirit." This win places Leverkusen on five points after four games, positioning them within play-off contention.

Patrik Schick, who scored just his second Champions League goal after 29 appearances, stressed the significance of this win for team morale. "I'm very happy that we won," he told DAZN. "The win helped us a lot in terms of team spirit and we have to continue like this."

Jose Mourinho faced another setback as Benfica failed to capitalise on their dominance during the match. Despite creating numerous chances, they left empty-handed. Mourinho refrained from criticising his players, telling Sport TV: "I told the players: with the performance they had in this game, we would win nine out of ten games."

Mourinho's current streak of six consecutive Champions League losses matches his total defeats from his previous 32 matches in the competition (18 wins, eight draws). This result leaves Benfica at 35th place among 36 teams, with only Ajax also having zero points.

Benfica has been unlucky in front of goal; they have hit the woodwork five times but scored just twice. This misfortune highlights their struggles despite often being competitive in matches.
