Ethan Mbappe's crucial goal led Lille to a 1-0 victory over Marseille, bringing them within two points of the Ligue 1 leaders. This win places Lille on equal footing with third-place Marseille, who previously drew with Toulouse. The result intensifies the competition for Lens and Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the league.

The decisive moment occurred in the 10th minute when Mbappe took advantage of a mix-up between Marseille's defence and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli. He expertly controlled a long pass from Nabil Bentaleb and curled his shot past Rulli, who was caught out of position after attempting to intercept the ball.

The match was tightly contested, with Lille managing only 0.36 expected goals (xG) from five shots compared to Marseille's 0.52 xG from six attempts, two of which were on target. Mason Greenwood, Ligue 1's top scorer, came closest to levelling for Marseille in the 76th minute. His low drive into the box was brilliantly saved by Berke Ozer.

Lille has now achieved four consecutive victories across all competitions for the first time since early 2021, when they had a seven-game winning streak. Benjamin Andre marked his 450th Ligue 1 appearance in style, also reaching his 200th game for Lille (96 with Ajaccio, 154 with Rennes). He excelled by winning ten out of twelve duels and regaining possession ten times.

Since returning from injury, Ethan Mbappe has been impactful with three direct goal contributions—one goal and two assists—in four matches. This game marked his first start since coming back to action.
