Lille Stuns Real Madrid 1-0 With Jonathan David's Penalty In Champions League Clash

In a surprising turn of events, Lille defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League thanks to Jonathan David's penalty. This result marks Madrid's first loss since January and highlights Lille's strong performance.

Lille surprised Real Madrid with a 1-0 victory, courtesy of Jonathan David's penalty in the first half. This defeat marked Madrid's first loss since January and ended their 14-match unbeaten streak in the Champions League. The decisive moment came when Eduardo Camavinga handled Edon Zhegrova's free-kick, leading to David's successful spot-kick just before halftime.

Real Madrid had not experienced a loss in any competition for 36 games, last falling to Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey. Despite their strong form, they appeared lacklustre against Lille. Andriy Lunin, replacing the injured Thibaut Courtois, made a crucial save earlier by deflecting David's shot onto the post. Meanwhile, Endrick tested Lucas Chevalier at the other end, becoming Madrid's youngest Champions League starter at 18 years and 78 days.

Lille Defeats Real Madrid with David's Penalty

In the second half, Zhegrova nearly doubled Lille's lead before Carlo Ancelotti brought on Kylian Mbappe from the bench to try and equalise. However, Real Madrid couldn't find a way through. Dani Carvajal missed a header, and Chevalier made a key save against Antonio Rudiger in the dying moments. Both teams now have three points each after two matches in this new league phase.

The match highlighted Real Madrid's struggles away from home in Europe. They began their campaign with a win over Stuttgart but are now winless in three consecutive away games in European competitions. This is their longest such streak since November 2016 when they went four away games without a win.

Lille's defence was instrumental in keeping Real Madrid at bay despite Los Blancos having chances worth 2.09 expected goals (xG). This was Real Madrid's first Champions League group stage defeat since losing to RB Leipzig in October 2022 and their first overall since being beaten by Manchester City in the semi-finals of the 2022-23 season.

This result underscores Lille's ability to halt even the most formidable opponents like Real Madrid. Their defensive organisation and Chevalier’s goalkeeping were pivotal as they managed to keep a clean sheet against one of Europe's elite clubs.
