Lille Secures Europa League Last-16 With Dramatic Comeback Against Red Star Belgrade

Lille progressed to the Europa League last-16 after defeating Red Star Belgrade 2-0 in the second leg, overturning a 1-0 deficit from the first leg. Olivier Giroud headed Lille ahead, with Nathan Ngoy sealing the win in extra time. The result marks Lille’s first knockout-round progression in this competition after losing the first leg on previous occasions.

Lille reached the Europa League last 16 with a 2-0 win at Red Star Belgrade, sealing a 2-1 aggregate success after extra time. The visitors overturned their 1-0 first-leg loss, with Olivier Giroud scoring early and Nathan Ngoy striking in the 99th minute to finish a controlled away performance in Serbia.

This comeback carried extra weight for Lille’s European history. For the first time in a major European competition knockout tie, Lille advanced after losing the first leg. On the previous five occasions when Lille were beaten in the opening game of a two-legged tie, the Ligue 1 side went out.

Lille reach Europa League last-16

Lille needed an immediate response after that first-leg setback, and it arrived inside four minutes. Captain Benjamin Andre advanced on the right flank and sent in an accurate cross. Giroud met it with a deft header, guiding the ball past goalkeeper Mateus and levelling the aggregate score before Red Star settled.

That early strike also calmed Lille at Stadion Rajko Mitic. Giroud’s know-how became a constant outlet, as Lille mixed direct balls and patient build-up. "Data Debrief: Giroud keeps a steady head" matched the display, with the forward engaging physically and giving Lille territory against a competitive Red Star back line.

Despite the goal, Mateus kept Red Star alive through the rest of the first half. The Brazilian reacted sharply to block Matias Fernandez-Pardo’s effort, preventing Lille from taking control on aggregate. Mateus then raced from the line to smother Fernandez-Pardo when the winger broke clear again, preserving Red Star’s hopes at the interval.

The pattern stayed open after half-time, with chances at both ends. Gaeten Perrin was released by an accurate pass from Hakon Haraldsson but struggled to set the ball and failed to shoot. Red Star responded through Seol Young-Woo, whose header from a long throw dropped onto the roof of the Lille net.

Lille Europa League progression sealed by Ngoy in extra time

The decisive moment came deep into extra time as Lille finally struck again. Substitute Felix Correia spotted Nathan Ngoy making an overlapping run on the right. Ngoy, introduced only minutes earlier, broke into the box and finished calmly at the near post, beating Mateus and confirming Lille’s spot in the Europa League last 16.

The numbers underlined Lille’s efficiency across the tie in Belgrade. Although Lille generated 0.99 expected goals compared with Red Star’s 0.91, the visitors hit the target with eight of their 16 shots. Red Star produced 15 attempts but managed only three on target, which limited pressure on the Lille defence across 120 minutes.

Giroud’s personal statistics highlighted the influence on this Europa League contest. The forward won the most duels in the match, with 15 successes from 27 challenges. Giroud also dominated in the air, claiming 12 of 19 aerial contests, and recorded the second-highest number of touches in the penalty area for Lille, with five.

Key match figures from Red Star Belgrade v Lille are shown below.

Team Goals (2nd leg) Aggregate Shots Shots on target Expected goals (xG)
Red Star Belgrade 0 1 15 3 0.91
Lille 2 2 16 8 0.99

Lille leave Serbia with a rare comeback achieved and a statistical edge that backed the result. The controlled finishing, Giroud’s aerial presence and Ngoy’s extra-time impact ensured Red Star’s first-leg advantage did not last, sending Lille forward in the Europa League with renewed confidence from a demanding knockout test.
