Lionel Messi concerned about returning to Argentina but wishes to play for Newell's Old Boys

By MyKhel Staff

Lionel Messi is poised to leave Inter Miami at the end of the 2025 season, which will be in December next year.

The Argentina legend wants to leave MLS for a return to Argentine football with Newell's Old Boys.

He has always been open about his deep connection to Newell's Old Boys, the club where he honed his skills as a young player. His tenure at Newell's, from 1995 to 2000, laid the foundation for a career that would later see him winning the Ballon d'Or eight times.

In a 2016 conversation with El Planeta Urbano, a Spanish magazine, Messi expressed his desire to return to Argentina and play for Newell's, highlighting his emotional bond with the club. As per El Nacional, Messi will join his boyhood club as his contract expires in the USA.

"If I go back to Argentina tomorrow, which I would love, the club I would play for would be Newell's," Messi said to El Planeta Urbano.

Lionel Messi concerned about return to Argentina

Messi's illustrious career has not dimmed his aspirations of playing in his homeland again, despite his concerns about the country's current state. In an interview with TyC Sports, he voiced his dream of donning Newell's jersey once more, albeit with reservations stemming from Argentina's social and security conditions.

"My dream is to play at Newell's but I don't know what will happen, and a part of that doubt is due to the way the country is at the moment," Messi said to TyC Sports.

The 37-year-old prioritizes the well-being and security of his family but the current sociopolitical conditions in his native country has concerned the legendary player.

Despite expressing some hesitation due to safety concerns in Argentina, Messi's potential return to Newell's Old Boys remains a topic of great interest.

"I have a family and my children come first, and then me, I want them to grow up in a calm place, being able to enjoy life with security. It is very ugly to see the things that happen in Argentina, that you can go out on the street and people want to rob you and that they can kill you," the Argentine further added.

Currently showcasing his talents with Miami, Messi has made a significant impact since joining the team. He helped the club to win their first title in the Leagues Cup last year, and has taken them in a superb position in the MLS as well. Inter Miami are currently on top of the Eastern Conference points table and are on course to win the Supporters Shield.
