Lionel Messi has created a new record after his goal in Inter Miami's latest MLS match against Toronto FC on Sunday (April 6).
In just his 29th MLS regular season match, Messi scored a superb left-footed half-volley right before halftime, leveling the game at 1-1.

Messi's start to the 2025 MLS season has been sharp. Despite being eased into the campaign, he has already delivered 3 goals and 2 assists in 4 matches. His goal against Toronto was especially significant was the first time he had scored against them, having previously gone goalless in earlier meetings.
Earlier in the first half, Messi had a goal ruled out after a VAR review flagged a foul in the buildup. Toronto had taken the lead through Federico Bernardeschi, and overall looked the better side in the opening 45 minutes. But Messi's equalizer ensured Miami went into the break on level terms.
With the goal against Toronto FC, Messi has now reached 44 goal contributions for Inter Miami, the most by a player for the club. The former Barcelona player surpassed fellow Argentine Gonzalo Higuain who had 43 contributions.
It's not just the numbers, it's the speed at which Messi has reached them. While Higuaín set his mark in 67 appearances, Messi has passed it in less than half the time.
Lionel Messi 44 (29)
Gonzalo Higuaín 43 (67)
Leonardo Campana 36 (80)
Luis Suárez 34 (32)
Robert Taylor 28 (90)
Head coach Javier Mascherano opted to start his veteran core- Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba despite the team facing a crucial second-leg clash with LAFC in the Concacaf Champions Cup midweek. Miami trail 1-0 from the first leg and will be counting on their stars to overturn the deficit.
The legendary footballer is expected to play a crucial part for Miami as they embark on a new chapter in continental football. Miami will also be participating in the Club World Cup as hosts, which starts on June 14.
