Lionel Messi Fined by MLS After Heated Philadelphia Union Incident

Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer following an incident during Inter Miami's 2-2 draw against the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday (August 19).

The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced an undisclosed fine for the Argentine forward after finding him in violation of the league's policy prohibiting hands to the face, head or neck of an opponent.

What did Lionel Messi do?

The incident took place in the 101st minute at Subaru Park, with tensions rising during the closing stages of an entertaining contest. Messi was involved in an altercation as the game entered stoppage time, leading to disciplinary action after the match. Inter Miami defender Ian Fray was also fined for a separate violation of the same league policy.

The match itself ended 2-2, with Philadelphia coming from behind to earn a point against Inter Miami. Messi remained a central figure in the contest, while Philadelphia teenager Cavan Sullivan also produced an impressive performance.

The disciplinary developments continued after the final whistle. Philadelphia's Sullivan had received a red card in the 102nd minute, but the Independent Review Panel later overturned the decision. As a result, Sullivan's one-match suspension and accompanying fine were rescinded, making him eligible for Philadelphia's next match.

Messi's fine does not carry a suspension, meaning the Inter Miami captain remains available unless affected by other fitness or disciplinary considerations. The MLS decision comes as Miami continue their push in the regular season, with Messi remaining one of the league's biggest attractions and most influential players.

The Argentine international returned to action for his team after his father's unfortunate demise, which took a massive toll on his life. Messi was part of the Argentina squad that reached the 2026 World Cup final, eventually losing to Spain.

The MLS season runs through December, and after that there will be a six-month pause as the league adjusts its timeline to an August-May window, similar to the top European leagues.
