Lionel Messi will return to action as his new club Inter Miami take on fellow Major League Soccer side FC Dallas in the round of 16 of the Leagues Cup 2023 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
Inter Miami are also seen as the favourite to win the game given the goal-scoring spree Lionel Messi has been on since arriving in the USA. The Argentine superstar scored five goals in three games, all coming in the Leagues Cup as MLS has been on a break for the ongoing pan-USA-Mexico club competition.
Lionel Messi scored a brace each in his last two games with the last coming against Orlando City in a 3-1 win. Inter Miami earlier demolished fellow Eastern Conference side Atlanta United in a prime Messi show as the 36-year-old World Cup winner scored twice and assisted once.
In his debut game, the forward scored a last-minute stunning freekick coming off the bench to beat Mexican side Cruz Azul. Lionel Messi is also joined at Inter Miami by two of his former Barcelona teammates in midfielder Sergio Busquets and defender Jordi Alba.
Alba is yet to make his full debut for the David Beckham co-owned club as the left-back made his first appearance off the bench against Orlando City after joining the club earlier in the week. Messi is also enjoying a reunion with Tata Martino, who is currently the manager of Inter Miami.
Inter Miami, who are currently bottom of the 15-club Eastern Conference group of the MLS, have splurged money during the ongoing transfer window as the club also acquired two young Argentines in Tomas 'Toto' Alves and Facundo Farias.
The recent foreign acquisitions haven't sat well with some outlets in the US media as they felt it could lead to a lack of exposure for indigenous players in the team.
