Lionel Messi: Know His Accomplishments in Laureus Award

Lionel Messi has now been nominated for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award for the eighth time. He had already made history when he won the award for the first time in 2020 as a footballer.

Till now, no footballer has ever won the prestigious award other than the Argentina team captain. Leo Messi is also the only player ever to have won the award to date coming from a team sport.

He could set the record too high for any other future player if he wins the award another time this year. However, he will have to fight off Erling Haaland who has also been nominated in the same category.

Lionel Messi won his first and Argentina's third World Cup back in December, 2022. The 2023 was eventful for the Argentine. The half-season he spent with PSG was not impressive. He made a move to the USA in the summer.

Arriving at Inter Miami, he started his life at his new club with a bang. The club that had not won in 11 matches before he arrived. After his arrival, they didn't lose any match till Messi led them to win their first-ever trophy, the Leagues Cup.

However, Haaland had a more eventful year. He helped Manchester City win their first-ever Champions League trophy and the treble. He also won the Premier League and Champions League Golden Boot awards last year in his first season with Man City.

It's not a surprise that Manchester City has been nominated for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award. Unsurprisingly as well, the Spanish Women's national football team has also been nominated in the same category as Man City.

Spain and Barcelona star Aitana Bonmati is the only footballer who has been nominated for the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year Award. Jude Bellingham has deservedly been nominated for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award.
