Lionel Messi's journey with Inter Miami seems far from over, as club owner Jorge Mas has confirmed discussions to extend the Argentine superstar's contract beyond 2025.

Mas, speaking about Messi’s integral role in the team's success, expressed optimism that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will be on the roster when Miami opens its new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, in 2026.

“Leo and I will sit and discuss the future,” Mas said as per GOAL. “As I’ve said before and I will repeat now, I would fully expect for the opening for our new stadium in Miami in 2026, after a trophy-laden 2025 season, that Leo Messi will be our No. 10.”

Messi’s current contract is set to expire at the end of 2025, but both parties hold an option to extend. Since his arrival in 2024, Messi has made a profound impact, notching 21 goals and 17 assists in just 21 matches, helping Inter Miami clinch the Supporters' Shield and solidifying his position as a leader both on and off the pitch.

With manager Tata Martino leaving the club due to “personal reasons”, Messi is playing a key role in determining the next coach, which is rumoured to be his former Barcelona and Argentina national teammate Javier Mascherano.

“Leo gave me what I asked him, which is input,” Mas explained, highlighting the club’s commitment to ensuring Messi feels comfortable under new leadership.

Miami is also gearing up for an ambitious 2025 season, targeting multiple trophies, including the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. Messi’s competitive spirit aligns perfectly with these goals, as Mas noted: “He’s a competitive beast who wants to win. That’s a trademark he shares with his owners.”
