Lionel Messi mesmerises fans with stunning return for Inter Miami in victory over Atlanta United

By MyKhel Staff

Lionel Messi once again proved his class as Inter Miami secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Atlanta United, climbing to the top of the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference standings.

The victory was particularly significant for Miami, as it served as payback for their shocking elimination to Atlanta in last season's playoffs. A thrilling contest at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in front of a packed crowd of 42,843 saw end-to-end action, with both sides pushing hard for dominance.

Atlanta drew first blood in the 11th minute when Emmanuel Latte Lath capitalized on a well-placed cross from Brooks Lennon. The Ivory Coast forward's header sailed past Miami's defense, putting the hosts in the lead early on.

However, Lionel Messi, ever the difference-maker, responded in trademark fashion just nine minutes later. The Argentine capitalized on a defensive lapse, snatching possession from Bartosz Silsz on the edge of the box before gliding past Derrick Williams and lifting a composed finish over veteran goalkeeper Brad Guzan. The equalizer not only shifted momentum in Miami's favor but also showcased Messi's razor-sharp instincts and technical brilliance.

The second half saw both teams creating chances, with Atlanta nearly reclaiming the lead through Tristan Muyumba's long-range strike, only for Miami goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo to make a crucial save, deflecting the effort onto the woodwork. At the other end, Guzan was equally impressive, pulling off a series of stops to deny Messi, including a vital 65th-minute block with his outstretched leg.

With time running out and a draw looking inevitable, Miami found their winner in dramatic fashion. In the 89th minute, Jordi Alba delivered an inch-perfect cross into the box, where Fafa Picault rose high to nod a precise downward header past Guzan and into the far corner. The late goal sealed all three points for Miami and extended their unbeaten start to the season.

Elsewhere in MLS, Nashville SC registered a 3-1 victory over Philadelphia Union, while reigning champions Los Angeles Galaxy managed their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw against Portland, though they remain at the bottom of the Western Conference.

For Miami, the win reaffirms their credentials as early contenders, with Messi continuing to inspire with his brilliance. As the season progresses, fans will eagerly await more magic from the legendary forward.
