Lionel Messi Sets Record With Goal In Seven Consecutive FIFA World Cup Matches
Lionel Messi became the first player to score in seven straight World Cup matches when he netted for Argentina against Jordan in Dallas on Saturday. The goal moved him past Just Fontaine and Jairzinho and took his World Cup tally to a record-extending 19.

The run began in Argentina’s 2-1 win over Australia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Messi also scored against the Netherlands and Croatia, before netting twice in the final against France, which Argentina won as he lifted the trophy.

He carried that form into the 2026 finals, scoring a hat-trick against Algeria and two more against Austria in Argentina’s second game. His strike against Jordan sealed the new mark for consecutive World Cup matches with a goal.
Fontaine had scored in six straight matches for France in 1958, while Jairzinho matched that feat for Brazil in 1970. Messi’s latest goal now stands alone as the longest scoring run by any player in World Cup history.
