Ahead of the FIFA World Cup next year, a significant blow is set to strike for Argentina and their fans worldwide.
Although Lionel Messi has admitted that next summer's FIFA World Cup is on his mind, he has not yet committed to whether he will play in the tournament.

The Inter Miami star will turn 38 during the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. After leading Argentina to glory in Qatar in 2022, Messi had previously indicated that tournament would be his last.
Speaking to Simplemente Futbol, Messi reflected on his thoughts, which reflects the current state of mind for the Argentine maestro.
"The truth is that when you start thinking about it, it's a long time away but at the same time it's going to pass quickly, no?" he was quoted as saying by The Athletic.
"For me this year is going to be important (for the World Cup), to be able to play with continuity, to feel good. Last year I joined up for pre-season and started a couple of games, then had to miss a few games through injuries or not feeling 100 per cent. This time pre-season has been good, I've started well and I feel good," the Argentina captain added.
Messi acknowledged that a busy schedule lies ahead, highlighting the packed MLS season and the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in June. Hence it will be important for him to manage work load.
As for the World Cup itself, Messi is cautious about setting any expectations too soon. "I think about it and wait and see but I don't want to set that goal either," he added. "I'll take it day by day and see how I feel physically above all else, and be honest with myself too."
Argentina recently secured their qualification for the 2026 World Cup, even as Messi missed the latest qualifiers. National team coach Lionel Scaloni has emphasised patience regarding the veteran's future with the team.
After winning the World Cup in 2022, Messi was poised to hang up his boots but the veteran continued with Los Albicelestes and went on to win the Copa America again in 2024. Although Messi hasn't confirmed his decision, the former Barcelona star is likely to wear the national team's colours next year.
As things stand, Messi is in no rush to make a final call, preferring to assess his physical condition as the year unfolds. If he maintains his form and fitness, another historic World Cup appearance may well be within reach.
