Lionel Messi to Manchester City? Four Premier League clubs who have been linked with Argentina Legend over the Years

By MyKhel Staff

Lionel Messi, one of the greatest footballers of all time, has been linked with various clubs throughout his illustrious career.

Despite spending the majority of his professional life at Barcelona and recently making waves at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Inter Miami, the Premier League remains a dream destination for many footballers.

Lionel Messi

The Argentine maestro has most recently been linked with Manchester City, as Pep Guardiola is eyeing to bring him on loan to save the club, who are currently going through a dismal form.

1. Manchester City

Manchester City has long been associated with a potential move for Messi, primarily due to the presence of Pep Guardiola, his former Barcelona coach. Guardiola and Messi formed one of the most successful player-coach duos in football history during their time at the Catalan club. Although Messi is said to be happy at Miami, a prospect of Premier League challenge and a potential reunion with Guardiola can change the dynamics.

2. Chelsea

Chelsea, under the ownership of Todd Boehly, was linked with Messi. Over the years, the Blues have been linked with marquee signings, and Messi is no exception. In the 2022-23 season, Messi was one of the players linked to play at Stamford Bridge but the move didn't materialize.

3. Arsenal

Arsenal were also in the race for Lionel Messi during the Arsene Wenger days. The former Gunners boss was very much interested in swooping Lionel Messi from Barcelona academy soon after signing Cesc Fabregas, but failed in the pursuit as Barcelona was not interested in selling the hot prospect at that time.

4. Newcastle United

With the financial backing of their Saudi-led ownership, Newcastle United has emerged as a potential destination for big-name players. While historically not a club associated with superstars of Messi's caliber, Newcastle's ambition was to land Messi at St. James' Park soon after their Saudi acquisition. There were many reports which linked the Argentine may don the Magpies' kits in the Premier League, but it remained only a dream.
