Lionel Messi To Play 2026 FIFA World Cup? Argentina Coach Lionel Scaloni Breaks Silence

By MyKhel Staff

Argentina's legendary footballer Lionel Messi has expressed his desire to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though it remains too early for any definitive announcements, according to national coach Lionel Scaloni.

Scaloni, who guided Argentina to their triumphant 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar, shared insights into the 37-year-old's mindset during an interview with DSPORTS. The record-breaking eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is reportedly eager to continue his journey with the national team.

"The first thing to say is that both he and his teammates are aware that there is a reasonable amount of time left and that he and everyone else are keen to play in the World Cup," Scaloni remarked.

However, the coach emphasized the need for patience, saying, "We will have to wait and see how things develop. He (Messi) knows what we are thinking and he is the most intelligent of us all."

Scaloni also reflected on Angel Di Maria's decision to step away from international football. The former Argentina forward, who clinched his second Copa America trophy last year, announced his retirement after a storied career.

"From what he said, it is over. And in the best possible way. If he had written his film, his book, his football story, I don't think he would have written it as well as he ended it," he stated.

In the last 2024 MLS season, Messi scored a total of 23 goals in 25 games and even led his team Inter Miami to a Supporter's Shield title as well. Till now in two season, the Argentine captain has so far scored 34 goals in 39 games for Miami in all competitions.

While Messi's future with the national team remains uncertain, the possibility of seeing him in the 2026 World Cup excites fans and teammates alike, keeping the dream alive for one of football's greatest icons ever.
