Liverpool Triumphs 2-1 Against Brighton Thanks To Carabali's Own Goal In WSL Clash

In a crucial Women's Super League match, Liverpool defeated Brighton 2-1. Jorelyn Carabali's unfortunate own goal sealed the victory after Olivia Smith's equaliser.

Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory over Brighton in the Women's Super League at St Helen's Stadium, marking their first win since early November. Olivia Smith opened the scoring for Liverpool, but Nikita Parris equalised before Jorelyn Carabali's own goal handed Liverpool the win. This victory was also Liverpool's first home triumph of the season.

After a sluggish start, Liverpool found their rhythm and took the lead just past the 30-minute mark. Smith showcased her skill by holding off Guro Bergsvand from midfield and firing a shot into the net's top corner. She nearly doubled the lead shortly after but missed her target, while Teagan Micah made a crucial save to deny Kiko Seike's header just before halftime.

Liverpool Wins 2-1 Against Brighton in WSL

Early in the second half, Mia Enderby almost increased Liverpool's advantage following another swift counter-attack. Opting to shoot rather than pass, her attempt narrowly missed the far post. However, Liverpool soon faced a setback when a loose touch allowed Parris to score with a deflected shot off Jenna Clark.

Despite this setback, Liverpool regained their lead eight minutes from time. Grace Fisk sent a cross back into Brighton's box, leading to Carabali inadvertently scoring an own goal as she struggled to clear it. This fortunate turn of events secured Liverpool's victory and moved them up to sixth in the WSL standings.

This win propelled Liverpool up to sixth place in the league table. Meanwhile, Brighton missed an opportunity to close in on the top four and remained four points behind Manchester United, who are in fifth place. The result extended Liverpool's winning streak against Brighton in the WSL to four matches.

Managerial Perspective

Matt Beard observed from the stands due to a touchline ban but was visibly relieved at full-time as his team ended their winless streak. The last time Liverpool scored and won was on November 3 against Aston Villa with a similar 2-1 scoreline. Smith’s goal broke a lengthy goalless spell of 438 minutes for Liverpool.

The match highlighted Liverpool’s resilience and ability to capitalise on opportunities despite earlier struggles. Their performance against Brighton demonstrated tactical improvements and determination that could be pivotal for upcoming fixtures in the league.
