Liverpool Secures 3-1 Comeback Victory Over Southampton With Two Penalties From Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah scored two penalties as Liverpool came from behind to defeat Southampton 3-1. This victory extends Liverpool's Premier League lead to 16 points.

Liverpool extended their lead in the Premier League to 16 points with a 3-1 victory over Southampton at Anfield. Mohamed Salah scored two penalties, helping Liverpool secure the win after initially trailing. Arne Slot, serving a touchline ban, watched from the stands as Southampton's Will Smallbone capitalised on a defensive error to score just before half-time.

After the break, Liverpool made significant changes. Andy Robertson, Alexis Mac Allister, and Harvey Elliott were introduced in a triple substitution. Darwin Nunez remained on the field despite a VAR check for violent conduct following a kick at Kyle Walker-Peters. He equalised in the 51st minute by tapping in Luis Diaz's cross.

Salah's Penalties Propel Liverpool to Victory

Three minutes after Nunez's goal, he was fouled by Smallbone, allowing Salah to score from the penalty spot into the top-left corner. A handball by Southampton's Yukinari Sugawara led to another penalty for Salah two minutes before full-time, securing Liverpool's victory.

Southampton remains at the bottom of the table with nine points. Meanwhile, Liverpool enjoys a substantial lead over Arsenal, who have two games in hand against Manchester United and Chelsea in the coming week.

Salah has been instrumental for Liverpool this season. He has successfully converted all nine penalties he has taken in the Premier League so far. This achievement matches Cole Palmer's record for Chelsea last season of maintaining a perfect penalty success rate.

This season is Salah's best yet, with 44 goal involvements (27 goals and 17 assists) in the Premier League. His previous best was 42 contributions during the 2017-18 season. Salah is now just three goal involvements away from equalling Andy Cole and Alan Shearer's record of 47 in a single season.
