Liverpool To Bolster Squad, Considers Zubimendi Signing: Arne Slot Confirms

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is eager to bolster his squad after their two pre-season friendlies at Anfield on Sunday. The Reds remain the only Premier League team yet to make a signing in the current transfer window and have been linked with Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi. Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp, has had a smooth transition, winning three of his five matches in charge, including two draws.

Slot's debut at Anfield saw Liverpool secure a 4-1 victory over Sevilla, followed by a goalless draw against Las Palmas in a behind-closed-doors match. Despite his confidence that new signings will arrive, Slot acknowledged the strength of the current Liverpool squad. "I think as a club like we are, we are always looking if we can strengthen the squad. But it's not so easy to strengthen the squad if you see both games today," said Slot.

Several first-team players participated in both matches at Anfield, including those who represented Liverpool at Copa America and Euro 2024. Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Darwin Nunez were among those who featured on Sunday. However, Slot mentioned that his players are not yet at their desired fitness levels.

"No, ideally we would have had them from the start, all of them," Slot began. "Then, players like Virgil [van Dijk] and all the others that went off after 60, 70 minutes could have played the whole game." He expressed satisfaction with their current fitness levels given the circumstances.

Slot noted that many players returned from holidays in strong condition and those present from the beginning remained fit throughout pre-season. "Yeah, pleased with the fitness level the team has, and also without injuries at the moment," he added. This aspect is crucial during pre-season preparations.

Despite not making any signings yet, Slot remains optimistic about strengthening the squad if possible. "I've said many times before that I've inherited a really strong team and if we can and if we think it's possible, we will strengthen the squad. But only if we think we can and if it's possible," he reiterated.

The Dutchman emphasised that while new additions are desirable, they must be feasible and beneficial for the team. His approach reflects careful consideration of potential transfers to ensure they enhance Liverpool's already robust lineup.
