The young attacking midfielder has declared himself ready to end his nine-season stay with Schalke by turning down their second offer of a new £5million-a-year deal, according to reliable Sport Bild.

Bengaluru, February 28: Schalke midfielder Max Meyer has reportedly handed his admirers Arsenal and Liverpool a boost by rejecting a new contract from the Royal Blues.

Both Arsene Wenger and Jurgen Klopp are interested in signing the 22-year-old German international this summer and would be happy to see him reject Schalke's new deal.

The young attacking midfielder has declared himself ready to end his nine-season stay with Schalke by turning down their second offer of a new £5million-a-year deal, according to reliable German mediahoue Sport Bild.

He will be a free agent in July, and the Bundesliga club fears he will be their latest player to move to the Premier League for nothing.

Arsenal snapped up defender Sead Kolasinac, while Liverpool raided the Gelsenkirchen-based club for Joel Matip and both of them were free transfers.

Meanwhile, another star man Leon Goretzka will join Bayern on a free transfer this summer.

Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel admitted: "All the talking has been done.

"It's now time to make a decision."

Meyer is a midfield player with plenty of versatility.

Even though he had played the majority of his career as a number ten, he has excelled this season under Dominico Tedesco in a deeper role.

Meyer is also capable of playing on either flank and would be a welcome addition to either Arsenal or Liverpool.

Schalke are in line for Champions League football next season, and one point off second-placed Borussia Dortmund and Meyer has played a key role in that.

Bayern and AC Milan are also ready to battle the Gunners and Reds for Meyer's signature.

He has won the European Under-21 Championship with Germany last year, and has collected four senior caps for the national team.
