Primary Keyword: Liverpool's Challenging 2025-26 Season Continues As Arne Slot Targets Sunderland Victory

Liverpool, led by Arne Slot, face a demanding 2025-26 campaign as they prepare for Sunderland. With eight league defeats and a string of draws, Slot emphasises improvement and resilience while recognising the need for results and momentum against promoted opposition at the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool visit Sunderland on Wednesday with Arne Slot describing the 2025-26 campaign as the toughest of a long coaching career. Liverpool sit sixth after a late 2-1 loss to Manchester City at Anfield, and face a Sunderland side unbeaten in the Premier League at the Stadium of Light this season.

The champions trail the top four by five points and have collected only one league win in 2026, drawing four and losing two. Liverpool also hold a 19-match unbeaten Premier League run against promoted clubs, with 14 wins and five draws, yet each of the last four such games has ended level.

Liverpool's tough 2025-26 season in focus vs Sunderland

Sunderland offer a strong contrast between home and away displays. Six goals have been conceded across their last two away fixtures, but at the Stadium of Light the promoted team are unbeaten in 12 league matches, winning seven and drawing five. No promoted club has started a top-flight season with a longer home unbeaten streak since Nottingham Forest in 1977-78.

Recent history between the sides also shapes expectations. Sunderland are winless in 11 Premier League meetings with Liverpool since a 1-0 home success in March 2012, decided by a Nicklas Bendtner goal. All three of Sunderland’s Premier League victories over Liverpool have come at home, yet Liverpool have avoided defeat on their last five league trips to the Stadium of Light, winning three and drawing two.

Slot offered a blunt assessment of Liverpool’s season so far when reflecting on recent setbacks. "That is fair to say [this is the toughest season I have had], by a mile," said Slot when asked if it had been a tough campaign. "All of the other seasons I have managed, there were only positives. I don't think I had ever lost two games in a row. It's an exception for me this season and it is for the players, too. They are not used to losing a lot or having a lot of draws. I am not used to that either. It's always more of a challenge after you lose a game of football to get them going again, and after a win, to tell them that we are not as good as they might think they are, so this season has been more challenging for me as well. You also take nice things out of it, though that may sound weird. I also look at how much improvement we are making. As a manager, we are always looking for results, but it is also important the players and the team improve, because if that doesn't happen, we would have an even bigger problem over here."

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris focused on maintaining standards at home while recognising Liverpool’s threat. "It is another good opportunity to win three points. We know the level of the opponent is high. Its important for us to be brave and ambitious and use the energy from the crowd to generate and sustain momentum," said Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris. "So far, we have been really good at home, but the next challenge is always the toughest. Liverpool are really good and will be very strong. We know that we have built strong foundations, but it is always a reset. Bouncing back from the last game will be a tough challenge, but we will be ready."

Sunderland vs Liverpool key players and statistics

Chemsdine Talbi again draws attention for Sunderland after scoring at Anfield in the reverse 1-1 draw and also netting in the recent victory over Burnley. The last Sunderland player to find the net in both league meetings with Liverpool in one season was Stan Cummins during the 1980-81 campaign.

For Liverpool, Hugo Ekitike leads the club’s Premier League scoring chart this season with 10 goals from 22 appearances. Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored against Manchester City, is suspended, which places added responsibility on Ekitike to provide a consistent attacking outlet at the Stadium of Light.

The underlying numbers highlight contrasting strengths. Sunderland have scored 19 goals in 33 Premier League clashes with Liverpool, an average of 0.6 per match. Among fixtures played at least 30 times in the competition, only Middlesbrough’s 0.5 goals per match against Chelsea is lower. Sunderland, however, have won three of their last five home games against reigning champions, losing two.

Liverpool’s away form remains uncertain. After winning their opening two away league fixtures this season, Liverpool have taken maximum points in just two of the last 10 on the road, with three draws and five defeats. They have allowed 21 league goals away from Anfield, one more than bottom club Wolves, who have conceded 20.

The Opta model still gives Liverpool a higher chance of victory than Sunderland despite those away concerns. Pre-match probabilities show Liverpool as favourites, with Sunderland viewed as dangerous underdogs and the draw rated slightly less likely than a home win.

As both clubs prepare for Wednesday’s meeting, Liverpool chase vital points to stay close to the Champions League positions during Slot’s most testing season, while Sunderland aim to extend a long unbeaten home sequence against high-level opposition. The clash at the Stadium of Light offers another detailed measure of each team’s progress and resilience.
